Half Frame (24x18mm)

0.5x 35mm

Half-frame cameras expose two images on each standard 35mm frame, doubling your shot count to 72 frames per roll. Popular in the 1960s-70s with cameras like the Olympus Pen series.

  • More visible grain (higher enlargement)

Grain visibility: Noticeably grainier than full-frame 35mm. Use slow films (ISO 50-100) for best results.

35mm (36x24mm)

1.0x baseline

The world's most popular film format. 36 exposures per roll in a compact, portable package. Massive selection of cameras, lenses, and film stocks. The standard by which all other formats are compared.

  • Affordable film and processing
  • Compact and portable
  • 36 frames per roll
Limitations
  • Visible grain at large print sizes
  • Shallower DOF requires wider apertures
  • Less tonal gradation than larger formats

Grain visibility: Fine with ISO 100 films. Visible at ISO 400 in prints larger than 8x10". Acceptable grain character for most uses.

6x4.5 (56x41.5mm)

2.7x 35mm

The "baby" medium format. The most shots per roll of 120 film (15-16) while offering nearly 3x the area of 35mm. Cameras like the Mamiya 645, Bronica ETR, and Pentax 645 are relatively compact for medium format.

  • 2.7x more area than 35mm
  • 15-16 frames per 120 roll
  • Relatively compact MF cameras
  • Rectangular aspect ratio (like 35mm)
Limitations
  • Smaller than other MF formats
  • 120 film more expensive than 35mm
  • Fewer camera options than 6x6 or 6x7

Grain visibility: Noticeably finer than 35mm. ISO 400 films look like ISO 100 on 35mm. Good for 16x20" prints.

6x6 (56x56mm)

3.6x 35mm

The square format. Iconic cameras: Hasselblad 500C/M, Rolleiflex TLR, Bronica SQ. The square composition eliminates the need to rotate the camera and offers unique creative possibilities. 12 frames per roll of 120.

Advantages
  • No portrait/landscape decision needed
  • Excellent for waist-level viewing
  • Crop to any aspect ratio later
  • Iconic Hasselblad system
Limitations
  • Square can feel restrictive
  • 12 frames per roll
  • Cropping wastes film area

Grain visibility: Excellent. Even ISO 400 films appear smooth. Prints beautifully to 20x20" and beyond.

6x7 (56x69mm)

4.5x 35mm

Often called the "ideal format" because its 5:4 aspect ratio is close to standard print sizes (8x10, 16x20). Cameras: Mamiya RB67/RZ67, Pentax 67, Mamiya 7. The RB/RZ are studio workhorses; the Mamiya 7 is a rangefinder dream.

  • 4.5x the area of 35mm
  • Near-perfect print aspect ratio
  • Beautiful shallow DOF
  • Exceptional image quality
Limitations
  • Only 10 frames per 120 roll
  • Large, heavy cameras (RB67: 2.3kg body)
  • Expensive film per frame

Grain visibility: Virtually invisible with ISO 100 film. Prints to enormous sizes with ease. Many professionals consider this the sweet spot of image quality vs. practicality.

6x9 (56x84mm)

5.4x 35mm

The largest common 120 format. Only 8 frames per roll but enormous negatives. Found in folding cameras (Fuji GW690, GSW690) and some panoramic cameras. The "Texas Leica" nickname for the Fuji 6x9 rangefinders.

  • Largest 120 format - massive negatives
  • Superb for landscape panoramics
  • Almost medium-format resolution approaching 4x5
Limitations
  • Only 8 frames per 120 roll
  • Very few camera options
  • High cost per frame

Grain visibility: Nearly grainless even with fast films. Contact prints from 6x9 negatives are already postcard-sized.

4x5 (127x101.6mm)

14.9x 35mm

The entry point to large format. Sheet film loaded one frame at a time into film holders. View cameras with bellows allow tilt/shift movements for perspective and focus plane control. The format of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and modern masters.

  • 15x the area of 35mm
  • Camera movements (tilt, shift, swing)
  • Individual sheet development
  • Contact prints are already large
  • Extraordinary detail and tonal range
Limitations
  • $3-8 per frame (film + dev)
  • Slow, deliberate workflow
  • Heavy equipment, tripod required
  • Loading film holders in dark bag

Grain visibility: Effectively invisible at any normal viewing distance. A 4x5 negative has enough information for wall-sized prints with no visible grain.

8x10 (254x203.2mm)

59.7x 35mm

The ultimate film format. Nearly 60 times the area of 35mm. Contact prints are exhibition-ready without enlargement. The format of Richard Avedon's portraits, Edward Weston's peppers, and Ansel Adams' finest landscapes. An exercise in slow, meditative photography.

Grain visibility: The concept of "grain" is irrelevant at this scale. You are looking at pure tonal information. 8x10 contact prints reveal detail invisible in any smaller format.
