Push & Pull Processing
How to change your film's personality in development. Gain speed in low light, reduce contrast in harsh sun, or transform the look of your favorite stock.
What is push/pull processing?
Push processing means intentionally underexposing your film (rating it at a higher ISO than box speed) and then overdeveloping it to compensate. You gain effective speed but increase contrast and grain.
Pull processing means intentionally overexposing your film (rating it at a lower ISO) and then underdeveloping it. You lose speed but reduce contrast and grain, which can be useful in high-contrast scenes.
The key: you must commit to the entire roll. Every frame on the roll gets the same development. Tell your lab (or adjust your own dev time) before processing.
How stops work
Push +1 stop = rate at double the ISO (e.g., 400 film rated at 800). Push +2 = quadruple (400 rated at 1600). Pull -1 = half the ISO (400 rated at 200).

Kodak Tri-X 400
The gold standard for push processing. Tri-X has been pushed by photojournalists since the 1950s and handles it beautifully at every stop.
Verdict: Tri-X pushed to 1600 is legendary. The grain and contrast at +2 is a look many digital photographers try to emulate.
Ilford HP5 Plus 400
HP5 pushes almost as well as Tri-X with a slightly different character - softer grain structure and more gradual contrast increase.
Verdict: HP5 at 1600 is the go-to for Ilford shooters. Some prefer its softer pushed look over Tri-X's harder contrast.
Kodak T-Max 400
T-grain technology means finer grain when pushed, but the character is different from traditional emulsions. More clinical, less "gritty."
Verdict: Best pushed just one stop. If you need ISO 1600+, consider T-Max P3200 or Delta 3200 instead.
Kodak Portra 400
Color film is less forgiving of pushing than B&W. Portra 400 can be pushed but the look changes noticeably.
Verdict: Push +1 is fine. Push +2 works but consider Portra 800 or CineStill 800T if you need the speed.
Kodak Portra 800
Verdict: One stop is the practical limit. Beyond +1, use CineStill 800T (no reciprocity, tungsten balanced) or switch to B&W.
Ilford Delta 3200
Important: Delta 3200 is already a pushed film! The true ISO is approximately 1000. The 3200 rating assumes push processing is the norm.
Verdict: Rating at 1600 gives the best balance. 3200 for the atmospheric look. 6400 only when you have no other choice.
CineStill 800T
CineStill 800T has no reciprocity failure, making it exceptional for long exposures at any push level.
Verdict: Pushing CineStill amplifies its cinematic character. +1 is a popular choice for night street photography.
What to tell your lab
When you drop off film for processing, you need to clearly communicate any push or pull instructions. Here's exactly what to say:
For push processing: "Please push this roll [number] stops." For example: Push +2 stops or Push to 1600 (for ISO 400 film).
For pull processing: "Please pull this roll [number] stops." For example: Pull -1 stop or Pull to 200 (for ISO 400 film).
Write it on the canister. Use a marker or tape to write the push/pull instructions directly on the film canister. Labs process many rolls and written instructions prevent mistakes.
Additional tips:
- Most labs charge extra for push/pull processing (usually $2-5 per roll)
- Not all labs offer push/pull - confirm before shooting
- C-41 (color) push/pull is less common than B&W - ask first
- E-6 (slide) pushing is possible but risky - color shifts are common
- If you develop at home, adjust your development time according to your developer's data sheet
